Cool January Events

January marks the beginning of the winter season and it's FULL of action-packed and fun events!

ADIRONDACK ICE FISHING CONTESTS

Get your fishing poles and tip up ready for two competitive ice fishing tournaments in Indian Lake and Raquette Lake. The Indian Lake Fish and Game Club hosts the Annual Central Adirondack Ice Fishing Derby, on beautiful Adirondack Lake, starting at 7am, Saturday, January 17th. Fish for both Northern Pike and Perch from 7am until 3 pm for cash prizes. Don't forget to register ahead of time since this contest is limited to the first 195 sportsmen.

If you need some more fishing action, head to Raquette Lake on January 31st for the Mike Norris Memorial Ice Fishing Derby where you'll fish for Landlocked Salmon, Brook/Lake Trout and Perch. Registration starts at 6am at the Raquette Lake Fire Hall. Please call 315-354-4581 for more information and to register.

MOUNTAIN EVENTS AT OAK MOUNTAIN SKI AREA IN SPECULATOR

January:

10th:   1st Rail Jam, 12:30-1:30pm
24th:   Ride for the Cure, 8:00am - 6:00pm
31th:   Snowshoe Race & Sacandaga Challenge downhill race: 10:00am/1:00pm

Head over to Oak Mountain, Hamilton County's only lift service ski area for a couple of great winter activities sure to keep you on your toes! The 1st of a 3 part series of Rail Jams will take place on Saturday, January 10th. Come to compete, or watch the skiers and boarders navigate the Oak Mountain Terrain Park in fierce competition. If you'd like a real Adirondack Challenge, plan to join us on on Saturday, January 31st for two fast-paced events. Enter the 5K or 10K Snowshoe race  at 10am, and you'll be racing 'round the mountain in one of the most challenging snowshoe races in the Adirondacks! Twenty to thirty competitors fill their lungs with fresh cold mountain air and fight for 1st place. But, it's also a lot of fun to watch, so please come and support the racers! If you want a little downhill ski action, the Sacandaga Challenge Ski Race starts at 1pm and includes a challenging downhill course with some suprises for the skiers! 

Oak Mountain has become the home of the "Ride for the Cure", a local fundraiser for cancer victims and research, sponsored by the Lake Pleasant Riders Snowmobile Club. Activities start after a hearty mountain breakfast at the ski lodge and conclude at 6pm with a buffet dinner back at the lodge after a full day of riding with fellow snowmobilers.  ADIRONDACK ICE BOWL Hockey Tournament

Although the cold temperatures prevail at the end of January, the action heats up at the Adirondack Ice Bowl Pond Hockey Tournament on Fourth Lake in Inlet, from January 23-25. This 2-day event has grown into one of our biggest area events, with over 40 participating teams playing non-stop action on 4 different ice hockey rinks in front of the historic Woods Inn Hotel in downtown Inlet. LONG LAKE WINTER CARNIVAL

The Long Lake Winter Carnival takes place at the Mt. Sabattis recreation area just after noon on Saturday, January 17th. The event features a variety of interesting & fun activities throughout the day including a snowmobile parade and crowning of the King and Queen. The newest event this year is the "Wackiest Hat Competition" and follows in the tradition of the hilarious frying pan toss! A fireworks display at dusk completes the festivities.
