The Upper West Branch of the Sacandaga River offers an 8-mile stretch of scenic flatwater paddling that generally follows NY Route 10 to Shaker Place in Hamilton County.
Paddling
Paddle downstream to explore Chub Lake via a narrow section of water on the right at a large pool. There is a nice picnic spot on a large rock here. Farther downstream, you can access Trout Lake through another channel. Campsites are available along the lakes.
For returning, you could turn around and paddle to where you started, or exit at a steep bank along Route 10 near Shaker Place. The takeout features a rough trail up the bank and limited roadside parking. The takeout point is about 6 miles downstream by car from the bridge.
How to get there
Start at the bridge where Route 10 crosses the river, just north of Arietta. Limited parking is available.
