Sacandaga River

Sacandaga River

The Sacandaga River parallels Route 30 between Speculator and Wells and is as scenic as it is productive. The Sacandaga River is one of the Adirondack's most fertile trout hatcheries and is heavily stocked with brown trout in the section between Wells and Speculator.

Fishing

Brown trout are stocked in the Sacandaga River and some wild brook trout are also found here. The Sacandaga State Campground provides the most popular fishing access. This area has excellent access with deep pools. Upstream from the campground, the river runs through a gorge where the road crosses it. This may appeal to daring fly fishers searching for brook trout. Upstream from the campground is the best spot for wild brookies.

How to get there

Access is from various points along Route 30, which runs along the river. There is also a state campground 2 miles south of Wells.
