Bear Paw Creek is a great place to search for brook trout.
Getting there
From the intersection of Route 28 and Limekiln Road in Inlet, follow Limekiln Road and turn left on Moose River Plains Road. Continue for 11.5 miles to the trailhead on the left. Take this left and drive the access road for an additional 0.2 mile to the trailhead. This access road is quite rough and should be driven very slowly.
Fishing
Follow the trail toward Lost Ponds, and just prior to the bridge crossing of Sumner Brook locate the trail on the right that leads to the flow where Bear Paw Creek and Sumner Stream come together. There is good shoreline access on the east side of the stream and from the end of the trail. Canoe or kayak access is only with a 0.5 mile carry.
The brook trout fishing here is excellent, especially where the cool waters of Bear Paw Creek come into the stream. Fly fishing is an option, and spring is the best time to fish here, as the water level is higher and cooler.
Special regulations: Always follow state fishing regulations and be sure to pick up a NYS Freshwater Fishing Guide at your local outfitters or regional DEC office.
