Inlet’s One Square Mile of Hope Lives On

Friday, April 19th, 2013

It’s been over 18 months since Inlet earned the world record (for the second time) for the largest floating raft with 1902 canoes, kayaks, and guide boats held together only by hands. But, thanks to the magnificent photo by Nancie Battaglia, the event is still in the forefront of national periodicals. You will recall that Battaglia’s photo appeared in Sports Illustrated and National Geographic. Recently it reappeared in the March issue of Reader’s Digest and the May/June edition of Sierra Magazine.

Whether due to the photo going viral or just because the Inlet event offered a popular activity for paddlers, challenges to the record are popping up everywhere. So far no one has succeeded in besting the record, but this year there are four attempts, any one of which may find Inlet having to recapture the world record.

On August 17, 2013, a group in Illinois calling themselves Floatzilla (floatzilla.org) will have a third go at the record, their first two attempts falling short, but gaining in numbers each time. They form their raft on the Mississippi River as part of a daylong series of water events.

Labor Day weekend will see two record attempts: on Saturday, August 31, a group in Sutton’s Bay (sbfloatilla.com) will try for a second time to make their “Floatilla” on Lake Michigan larger than Inlet’s. Last year they were getting close with their over 1750 boat total. On Sunday, September 1, a new entry in the competition will try to break Inlet’s record. This group is the Vashon Youth and Family Services group (vyfs.org) on Vashon Island in Puget Sound near Seattle, Washington.

Another new contender is the New Hampshire Lake Association (nhlakes.org) on the other side of the country. They will make their attempt on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire on Saturday, September 7.

The latter two groups have enlisted the aid of the One Square Mile of Hope Committee by way of conference calls. The Inlet group has generously shared the organizational information and tips they have gained from their two successful record-breaking events.

So far, OSM has not heard of any international attempts to wrest their world record title, but their fame has certainly spread from “sea to shining sea.” For further information about any of the challenges, go to their websites, listed above.

Snow & Trail Report – March 23, 2013

Saturday, March 23rd, 2013

Another 2-3 inches of snow and it is still falling lightly.

Snowmobile groomer has been out. Trails are in fair to good condition.

Ski groomers have also been out and they report excellent trails everywhere with 12-14 inches of base if not more.

Ice skating rink is open an in excellent condition and so is the sledding hill.

Snow & Trail Report – March 21, 2013

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Another 5 or 6 inches of snow overnight here in Inlet.  Don’t trust that snow stick at www.hamiltoncountychoppers.com.  I don’t care what it says.  That stick is in my front yard.  Yesterday it said 9 inches.  This morning I brushed a good 5 inches off the truck and the stick read 10 inches. ?? Must be drifting? Kids shoveling in front of it when I’m not looking? Anyways …

The Inlet snowmobile groomers are out this morning! I saw one in front of the Ole Barn on my way in to work and the other was crossing 28 heading towards Eagle Bay.

No word from the ski groomers yet. Maybe that means they are out on the trails?

Only 20 degrees out there so the ice skating rink should still be in good shape and this new snow on the sledding hill definitely can’t hurt it!

Snow & Trail Report – March 20, 2013

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013

We have received quite a bit of snow over the last couple days.  I am talking over a foot of snow!  There is at least one snowmobile groomer out today working on the Inlet trails.  Trails should be in fair condition today.  Still watch for wet/thin spots, but there may even be some good spots out there! :)

The ski groomers report that all of Fern Park has been groomed including Ralph’s Run and the South Loop.  The Inlet Golf Course has also been recently groomed.  Trails are in very good condition.

Ice skating rink has 2 inches of ice and is in fair condition.  Sledding hill looks good!

Snow & Trail Report – March 19, 2013

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

We have received another 4 inches of snow overnight and it is still coming down pretty hard right now.

No groomers on the Inlet snowmobile trails that I am aware of.  Not sure if Webb is sending any out today either.  I would call the trails in fair “springlike” condition.

Ski groomer report from Sunday said Fern Park had been groomed and trails there and at the Inlet Golf Course were in fair to good condition.

Ice skating rink is still open and in fair condition.  The sledding hill will look good today!

Trail & Snow Report – March 16, 2013

Saturday, March 16th, 2013

We have received about 6-8 inches of new snow.  I do not hear the Inlet snowmobile groomers out, but I was told they are grooming in Webb.

The ski groomer was planning to hit the Inlet Golf Course this morning and then head over to Fern Park this afternoon.  Conditions should be pretty nice!

Ice skating rink is still open and the sledding hill has fresh snow to play on.
